Dr. Toy Awards - Because children learn through play, Dr. Toy goes straight to the source to see
what works and what doesn’t. The group observes children at play to find out what toys stimulate them and for how long, as well
as how they use them. In conjunction with the observations, the group assesses quality, safety, educational value and price.
Remembering that children at play equals minds at work, Dr. Toy approaches the evaluation process with a certain respect for fun,
all the while keeping in mind the meaning behind it.
National Parenting Center – Also started in 1989, The Seal of A
pproval program is an independently run system designed by The National Parenting Center to judge not only toys, but a
variety of child and parenting products. Through a multi-step test, volunteers consisting of parents, children and educators
are given the opportunity to examine the submitted items over an eight week time frame. Things considered are desirability,
sturdiness, interactive stimulation, and other attributes that are critical to a quality product.
National Parenting Publications Awards (NAPPA) - Taking pride in their comprehensive approach to
evaluation, for over 16 years, NAPPA has been reviewing children’s products and parenting resources, examining them from both an
expert as well as consumer point of view. An independent panel of judges evaluate hundreds of products to find out which are the
most fun and appealing as well as to determine their level of safety, educational value and age-appropriateness. NAPPA tries to
filter through the abundance of information out there to provide an objective assessment that will please the most important
parties involved – the parents and the kids.
Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Awards – Founded in 1989, Oppenheim is the only independent consumer
reviewer of children's media. Unlike other reviewers, they don't take ads and entry fees from companies they review. And unlike
other companies, they don't rely exculsively on kid-testing, only including it as one factor of assessment. When you see the
Oppenheim seal, you can trust that the product was at first chosen by a noted expert in child development, children's literature,
and education, and then passed on to an assembly of the most honest and exact group of judges - the kids.
