Requirements of the American Society for Testing and Materials

The Juvenile Products Manufactures Association (JPMA) was developed to help guide parents toward purchasing juvenile products that are built with safety in mind. Items that have the JPMA seal of approval meet the quality, safety and functional requirements established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). At All Childrens Furniture, we understand the importance of child safety. The following lists represent the major requirements of the ASTM for particular child products.

Test Requirements for Bassinets and Cradles (ASTM F2194):
  • Spacing of non-moving side components
  • Openings on mesh / fabrics
  • Weight & stability
  • Sleeping pad thickness / dimensions
Test Requirements for Full-size Cribs (ASTM F1169 and 16 CFR Part 1508):
  • Corner post extensions
  • Dynamic impact testing for crib structural integrity
  • Crib interior dimensions and component spacing
  • Impact testing of crib side rails
  • Mattress support crib attachment evaluation
  • Latching mechanism tests
  • Plastic teething rail tests

Test Requirements for Walkers and Stationary Activity Centers (ASTM F977) (ASTM F2012):
  • Prevention of falls down stairs
  • Stability testing and tipping prevention
  • Structural integrity
  • Occupant retention: Testing of leg openings

Test Requirements for Hand-held Infant Carriers (ASTM F 2050):
  • Stability for preventing tip over
  • Restraint system tests
  • Slip resistance (forward, side and backwards)
  • Carrying handle / latch preconditioning cycling integrity and endurance

Test Requirements for Soft Infant Carriers (ASTM F2236):
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Leg openings
  • Dynamic weight / load tests
  • Static weight / load tests
  • Requirements for warning statements on products and in instructions

  • Brake requirements limited rotation of braking wheels
  • Load tests on seat and footrests
