The Juvenile Products Manufactures Association (JPMA) was developed to help guide parents toward purchasing juvenile products that are built with safety in mind. Items that have the JPMA seal of approval meet the quality, safety and functional requirements established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). At All Childrens Furniture, we understand the importance of child safety. The following lists represent the major requirements of the ASTM for particular child products.

Test Requirements for Bassinets and Cradles (ASTM F2194):

• Spacing of non-moving side components
• Openings on mesh / fabrics
• Weight & stability
• Sleeping pad thickness / dimensions

Test Requirements for Full-size Cribs (ASTM F1169 and 16 CFR Part 1508):

• Corner post extensions
• Dynamic impact testing for crib structural integrity
• Crib interior dimensions and component spacing
• Impact testing of crib side rails
• Mattress support crib attachment evaluation
• Latching mechanism tests
• Plastic teething rail tests

Test Requirements for Portable Bed Rails (ASTM F2085):

• Accessible holes and openings to prevent entrapment hazards
• Enclosed openings may not permit passage of Torso Probe
• Openings created by displacement of rail shall NOT permit passage of Torso Probe
• No protrusions which could permit entanglement
• Openings between bedpost and rail end > 9”
• Visable warning statements and instructions

Test Requirements for Toddler Beds (ASTM F1821):

• Mattress retention
• Mattress support systems attached / detached to end structures
• Guard rails
• End structures

Test Requirements for Baby Changing Tables for Domestic Use (ASTM F2388):

• Structural integrity
• Stability test for preventing tip over
• Entrapment and enclosed openings / shelves prevention
• Barriers must also be tested

Test Requirements for Infant Bouncer Seats (ASTM F2167):

• Stability, structural integrity for preventing tip over
• Proper function of restraint system
• Slip resistance
• Accidental disassembly / collapse prevention
• Drop test

Test Requirements for Infant Swings (ASTM F2088):

• Stability test for preventing tip over
• Test to prevent unintentional folding
• Tests on restraint system
• Requirements for Cradle Swing orientation
• Specific requirements for Battery Operated swings

Test Requirements for Play Yards / Non Full-size Cribs (ASTM F406 and 16 CFR Part 1509):

• For Rigid Sided Cribs and Play Yards:
• Corner Post extensions
• Dynamic impact testing for crib structural integrity
• Crib interior dimensions and component spacing
• Impact testing of crib side rails
• Evaluation of mattress support attachment to crib
• Latching mechanism test
• Plastic teething rail test
• For Mesh / Fabric Cribs and Play Yards:
• Height of sides, minimum
• Rail and floor (Dynamic and Static strength)
• Mesh openings and strength of attachment
• Fabric and seam strength
• Floor pad thickness
• Locking device requirements

Test Requirements for Gates and Enclosures (ASTM F1004):

• Size of completely bounded openings
• Height of sides
• Strength of top rails and framing components
• Bottom spacing
• Configuration of uppermost edge

Test Requirements for Walkers and Stationary Activity Centers (ASTM F977) (ASTM F2012):

• Prevention of falls down stairs
• Stability testing and tipping prevention
• Structural integrity
• Occupant retention: Testing of leg openings

Test Requirements for Hand-held Infant Carriers (ASTM F 2050):

• Stability for preventing tip over
• Restraint system tests
• Slip resistance (forward, side and backwards)
• Carrying handle / latch preconditioning cycling integrity and endurance

Test Requirements for Soft Infant Carriers (ASTM F2236):
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Leg openings
• Dynamic weight / load tests
• Static weight / load tests
• Requirements for warning statements on products and in instructions

Test Requirements for Carriages and Strollers (ASTM F833):

• Brake requirements limited rotation of braking wheels
• Load tests on seat and footrests
• Stability tests with test dummy / simulated climbing child
• Restraint integrity of safety belt attachment points and mechanisms
• Evaluation of occupant retention in the reclined position
• Minimum withdrawal force of caps and plugs that a child can grasp between thumb and forefinger
• Combination units (with car seats) must also be tested

Test Requirements for High Chairs and Hook-on Chairs (ASTM F404) (ASTM F1235):

• Disengagement / bounce test
• Drop test
• Push / Pull test
• Weight limit
• Protection from exposed coil springs
• Scissoring, shearing and pinching prevention
• Accessible holes and openings to prevent entrapment hazards
• Stability tests with test dummy
• Restraint integrity of retention to test dummy
